The Danpa Adanfo Co-operative Block Producers’ Society Limited has officially received its Certificate of Registration from the Department of Cooperatives, granting the group legal recognition to operate as a cooperative society in Ghana.
The certificate was presented by the Senior Cooperative Officer at the Department of Cooperatives, Accra Metro, Nathaniel Acorlor, at the offices of Green Construct ALS (GCALS) at Achimota Mile 7 in Accra.
The registration follows a six-month certification and registration process under Phase Two of the SPVO Certification Project, an initiative aimed at formalising small-scale and informal block producers in the Greater Accra Region.
The project is being implemented by a consortium comprising Green Construct ALS (GCALS), Rocks Group, People’s Dialogue on Human Settlements (PD Ghana), Habitat for Humanity Ghana and Spaak Circular Solutions of the Netherlands, with support from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ghana.
Speaking after the presentation, Mr. Acorlor said the Department of Cooperatives, under the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, is mandated by law to register, supervise, inspect and audit cooperative societies across the country.
He noted that Danpa Adanfo represents a unique model, combining characteristics of both an industrial and service-based cooperative.
“We’ve not had a cooperative like this before,” he said.
According to him, the registration process involved sensitisation programmes, governance training, preparation of by-laws, financial reviews and inspections before the group was recommended for approval.
“With the certificate issued, Danpa Adanfo is now legally recognised by the Government of Ghana,” he added.
President of the cooperative, Isaac Boateng, described the registration as a major milestone and pledged the group’s commitment to producing quality building materials.
“We’ve waited for this moment. Now that we are certified, we are ready to work,” he said.
“Our immediate focus is to produce quality blocks that meet Ghana Standards Authority requirements while remaining affordable.”
Treasurer of the cooperative, Ewurabena Ansah, however, identified funding as a key challenge facing the newly registered society.
“We need resources to expand the cooperative, strengthen our operations and build a reliable workforce to meet growing market demand,” she said.
Project Lead at Green Construct ALS, Gabriel Opoku Darko, said the registration marks an important step towards building a more organised and competitive block production sector.
“The real success of the cooperative will be measured by how effectively its members work together to build a sustainable, trusted and competitive organisation,” he stated.
The SPVO Certification Project seeks to improve standards, promote formalisation and enhance market access for block producers while supporting sustainable growth within Ghana’s construction industry.
