Kumasi, June 17, GNA – Mr. Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi, Mayor of Kumasi, has intensified proactive efforts to prevent flooding in the metropolis by embarking on inspections of flood-prone communities and drainage channels ahead of the peak rainy season.

Leading a team of officials from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Assembly Members and security personnel, the Mayor toured some vulnerable areas within the city to assess the state of drainage systems and identify urgent interventions required to avert flooding.

The team visited the Asafo Market enclave and the WAEC drainage area, where several choked drains and waterways were identified for immediate desilting and maintenance works.

The exercise forms part of the Assembly’s strategy to safeguard lives, property and public infrastructure from the devastating effects of flooding during heavy rains.

Mr. Boadi said the Assembly was committed to ensuring that drainage channels remained free-flowing to reduce the risk of flooding across the metropolis.

He noted that regular inspections and prompt interventions were necessary to address emerging challenges before they escalated into disasters.

The Mayor assured residents that the Assembly would sustain the inspection exercises and undertake continuous desilting of drains and gutters in identified hotspots to improve the city’s resilience to flooding.

As part of efforts to complement the flood prevention campaign, the KMA has also intensified public education on environmental sanitation.

A statement issued by the Public Relations Unit of the Assembly urged residents to keep their surroundings clean and desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains and waterways.

The statement announced that from July 1, 2026, a special task force made up of environmental health officers and security operatives would begin community inspections to enforce sanitation and environmental health regulations.

It further disclosed that a major clean-up exercise would be undertaken at the Abrepo Electoral Area on July 4, 2026, under the leadership of the area’s Assembly Member, Mr. Bosie Amponsah Mensah.

The Assembly expressed optimism that the combined interventions would significantly reduce flooding and improve environmental sanitation in the metropolis.
