The 99th edition of the Comrades Marathon once again demonstrated why South Africa remains one of the world’s premier destinations for sport tourism, cultural exchange, and world-class events. Held on Sunday14 June 2026, the iconic ultramarathon attracted thousands of athletes, supporters, and visitors to KwaZulu-Natal, delivering significant economic benefits while showcasing the country’s renowned hospitality, resilience, and unity.

Widely regarded as the world’s oldest and largest ultramarathon, the Comrades Marathon transformed Durban, Pietermaritzburg, and surrounding communities into a vibrant celebration of athletic excellence and South African pride. More than 21,600 runners from South Africa and across the globe participated in this year’s challenging 86-kilometre “Up Run” from Durban to Pietermaritzburg, while an estimated 65,000 spectators lined the route to cheer on competitors.

It is estimated that the event generated close to R1 billion for the KwaZulu-Natal economy, underscoring its value as a major economic driver for the province. Direct visitor spending was estimated at approximately R210 million, benefiting businesses across accommodation, hospitality, transportation, retail, and tourism sectors. Hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, transport operators, township traders and small businesses experienced a significant boost, with athletes and visitors arriving days before the race, extending their stay over the Youth Day long weekend to explore the province’s diverse tourism offerings, including its pristine coastline, rich cultural heritage, wildlife attractions, and scenic landscapes.

According to the eThekwini Municipality, the Comrades Marathon continues to be one of the city’s most valuable tourism and economic assets.,.

Approximately 1,300 temporary jobs were created during the marathon period, ranging from traffic management and event operations to waste management and logistical support. A fan park hosted at Kings Park Athletics Stadium offered spectators live race coverage while creating opportunities for local vendors and entrepreneurs to benefit from increased foot traffic.

In the lead-up to the marathon, Brand South Africa welcomed international runners through its South Africa Experience programme. The initiative provided visitors with an opportunity to discover the province’s history, culture, and the remarkable legacy of the Comrades Marathon, while experiencing the warmth and hospitality for which South Africans are known.

“We are honoured to showcase the warmth, diversity, and spirit that make South Africa a world-class destination for sport, tourism, and cultural exchange,” said Toni Gumede, Acting Marketing Manager at Brand South Africa.

Ahead of race day, international athletes toured sections of the route and visited key attractions across KwaZulu-Natal. The experience offered them not only insight into the demanding challenge ahead but also an appreciation for the province’s breathtaking scenery, vibrant communities, and cultural richness.

As dawn broke on race morning, the atmosphere reflected the very essence of South Africa: determination, hope, unity, and excellence. Athletes from every corner of the country and around the world gathered at the start line, united by a shared commitment to overcome one of the toughest endurance challenges in global sport.

The race produced exceptional performances that further elevated South Africa’s sporting reputation on the international stage. South African athlete George Kusche delivered a remarkable run to claim victory in the men’s race, crossing the finish line in a record-breaking time of 5:15:56 and surpassing the previous ‘Up Run’ record set in 2008. The achievement marked a significant milestone in his career after finishing 12th in his Comrades debut the previous year.

In the women’s race, South African superstar Gerda Steyn once again cemented her place among the legends of the Comrades Marathon. Steyn claimed her fifth Comrades title in a new record time of 5:44:53, becoming only the second woman in history to win the prestigious race five times. Her achievement further strengthens South Africa’s standing as a nation that continues to produce world-class athletes capable of competing at the highest level.

A total prize purse of R8.2 million was awarded to top-performing athletes, with male and female champions each receiving R925,000 and additional incentives available for record-breaking performances.

Beyond the records, medals and prize money, the 2026 Comrades Marathon represented something far greater. It showcased South Africa’s ability to host globally-recognised sporting events that unite people across cultures, languages, and nationalities. It highlighted our country’s tourism appeal, economic potential, and the enduring spirit of Ubuntu that welcomes visitors from around the world.

As South Africa prepares for the landmark 100th running of the Comrades Marathon in 2027, this year’s event stands as a powerful reminder that sport remains one of our greatest ambassadors. Through every stride taken between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, the Comrades Marathon once again carried the story of a resilient, welcoming, and world-class South Africa to a global audience.

The road may have ended in Pietermaritzburg, but the legacy of the 2026 Comrades Marathon will continue to inspire athletes, communities, and future generations while contributing meaningfully to economic growth, national pride, and South Africa’s reputation as a leading destination for sport and tourism.
