Thousands of Nigerians residing in Canada have teamed up with Ghanaian supporters to give the Black Stars the support they need in their opening group match against Panama at the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

The Chairman of the Unified Nigeria Supporters Club, Vincent Okumagba, told The Guardian yesterday from his base in Canada that thousands of Nigerians residing in the country have resolved to come out in large numbers to give the Black Stars a huge support in their opening match on Wednesday (Thursday morning).

Okumagba hinted that scores of Ghanaian supporters would arrive in Toronto this morning.

“The majority of their supporters will leave Accra this Sunday and arrive here on Monday. They are coming in large numbers.

“Nigerians residing in Canada formed an Association of Nigerian Football Supporters here in 2007 when we came to Canada for a FIFA event. Since then, we have been maintaining a cordial relationship with the members.

“Now that the Super Eagles could not qualify for the World Cup, all our members have agreed to work for Ghana and other African countries participating in the World Cup,” he stated.

On the performance by the Atlas Lions of Morocco against five-time champions, Brazil, on Saturday night, Okumagba said:

“It was a good beginning for Morocco. Many of us thought they would be afraid of Brazil, but it was the other way round. Morocco actually proved that they are African giant. They made us proud, and I hope others like Ghana, Senegal, Algeria,
Tunisia, Egypt, Cote d’Ivoire, DR Congo, and Cape Verde will borrow a leaf from the performance of Morocco in this World Cup.”
