As South Africa marks Youth Month, conversations around opportunity, leadership, and empowerment are taking centre stage. For the Dotsure SWD Eagles Head Coach, Heyneke Meyer, these conversations are closely linked to the role sport can play in shaping futures across the country.
Having coached at every level of the game, Meyer has seen first-hand how rugby can build confidence and open doors that extend far beyond the field.
Rugby’s Role in Youth Empowerment
South Africa has long been recognised as one of the world’s leading rugby nations, producing talented players through a strong school and club system. Yet Meyer believes the real value of the sport lies in its ability to develop people.
“Rugby teaches discipline, teamwork, accountability, leadership, and resilience,” he says. “These are essential life lessons that young people carry with them long after their playing days are over.”
According to Meyer, investing in youth rugby is about more than identifying the next professional player. It’s about creating environments where young people can grow and learn to believe in themselves.
Establishing Grassroots Through Rugby Communities
Across the country, local rugby continues to play a vital role in developing future talent. From schools and clubs to community programmes and volunteers, countless people contribute to creating rugby opportunities for young athletes every year.
Meyer believes these structures are the foundation of South African rugby’s continued success.
“Young players need quality coaching and positive role models,” he explains. “When those elements are in place, rugby can become a vehicle for personal growth.”
He has witnessed many young athletes rise from challenging circumstances to create better futures for themselves and their families through sport. At the same time, he believes communities benefit when young people have access to positive activities with clear goals.
Creating Opportunities Through Local Talent Development
One of the top priorities within the Dotsure SWD Eagles structures is local talent development. The Southern Cape region is home to passionate rugby communities and talented young players, many of whom dream of one day representing their region at a professional level.
Meyer believes organisations have a responsibility to help make those dreams achievable.
“We want young people to see a pathway for themselves,” he says. “When young players believe opportunities exist, they are more likely to stay committed, work hard, and continue pursuing their goals.”
This commitment to development is supported through ongoing initiatives by dotsure.co.za, that focus on strengthening communities and creating ways for people to thrive.
Inspiring the Next Generation
For Meyer, the future of South African rugby depends on far more than results on the scoreboard. He believes success should also be measured by the positive impact on the lives involved.
“Young people need something positive to aspire to,” he says. “If rugby can help unite communities and inspire young people, then we are achieving something meaningful.”
