Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has expressed confidence in the Black Stars’ ability to upset the favourites and make a strong impression at the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite low expectations from many football observers.
Ghana are set for their fifth World Cup appearance, after booking a place for the expanded tournament to be co-hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The West African football heavyweights are paired in Group L against European giants, England, 2018 World Cup finalists, Croatia and Panama. Ghana will open their account against Panama before taking on England and Croatia respectively.
Speaking at the Philadelphia Church in Ghana, Adams drew inspiration from the biblical story of David and Goliath, insisting that the Black Stars have what it takes to overcome some of the world’s football powerhouses.
“Per the rankings, no one believes Ghana will perform at the World Cup but since we are here, we have come for the symbolic stone David used to bring down Goliath for the Black Stars for the team to conquer all the big guns at the tournament” he said.
The West African football heavyweights has already arrived in the United States as preparation intensify for the much-anticipated tournament, which kick-start on Thursday, June 8, 2026.
Ghana has previously competed in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022, with their best performance coming in 2010 when they reached the quarterfinals.
