The Ministry of Health has summoned the Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, to explain reports that the hospital temporarily stopped admitting new patients at its Accident and Emergency Centre.
In a letter dated June 3, 2026, and signed by the Chief Director of the Health Ministry, Desmond Boateng, the Ministry said it had taken note of a statement circulating on social media indicating that KATH’s Accident and Emergency Centre was full and unable to admit new cases.
The Ministry also referenced comments reportedly made by the hospital’s Head of Public Affairs on Channel One TV, confirming management’s position regarding the centre’s inability to accept additional patients.
According to the Ministry, the decision contravenes a directive issued by President John Dramani Mahama instructing hospitals not to turn away emergency cases.
The letter directed the KATH CEO to appear before the Minister of Health by noon on Thursday, June 4, 2026, to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against him for allegedly contradicting the President’s directive.
“This is contrary to a clear directive of His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, to hospitals not to turn away emergency cases,” the Ministry stated.
The Ministry said it expects the full cooperation of KATH management as it investigates the matter.
The development follows growing public concern over reports that the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Centre had reached full capacity and was unable to admit new patients.
However, on June 3, KATH resumed emergency admissions, with authorities indicating that bed availability at the facility had improved slightly.
The hospital’s Accident and Emergency Centre, which was designed to accommodate 37 patients, is currently handling far more than its intended capacity, raising concerns about its ability to safely provide care for critically ill patients.
