NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – Somalia has recalled its ambassador to Kenya, Jibril Abdulle, amid a social media backlash sparked by a photograph showing him standing alongside Israel’s ambassador to Kenya at an agricultural trade conference in Nairobi, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The image, which circulated widely on Somali social media, showed Ambassador Jibril at the 6th Africa Avocado Congress and Expo – a conference organised by the Avocado Society of Kenya, the country’s leading agricultural trade body. His presence at the event was reported by some social media accounts as attendance at an Israeli-hosted function, a claim a review of the event’s organisers does not support.
Somalia’s Foreign Ministry has launched an internal review into the ambassador’s participation, with officials examining whether proper authorisation procedures were followed before he attended. Outgoing President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has been briefed on the matter, sources said.
The Photograph and the Political Climate
The controversy emerged at one of the most sensitive moments in recent Somalia-Israel relations. Days before the photograph appeared online, President Hassan Sheikh had described Israel as an enemy of the Palestinian people and accused it of seeking military influence in Somalia and across the wider region.
His remarks came directly after Israel’s formal recognition of Somaliland as an independent state – a move widely condemned in Mogadishu as a direct challenge to Somalia’s territorial sovereignty. The recognition has sharpened public and political scrutiny of any perceived contact between Somali officials and Israeli representatives.
Against that backdrop, the photograph of Ambassador Jibril standing beside Israel’s Nairobi envoy – at any event, for any reason – proved more than sufficient to ignite public anger and prompt a government response.
Somalia-Israel tensions have reached a level where the presence of a Somali diplomat in the same room as an Israeli official carries political consequences that no briefing document can fully anticipate.
What the Ambassador Was Actually Doing
Ambassador Jibril attended the Nairobi conference in his official capacity as Somalia’s diplomatic representative in Kenya and was promoting agricultural trade and investment opportunities on behalf of his country, according to people with knowledge of the event.
The Africa Avocado Congress, now in its sixth year, is a continent-wide gathering that brings together government officials, exporters, investors and agricultural stakeholders. It is convened by the Avocado Society of Kenya in partnership with regional and international bodies and routinely draws a broad cross-section of diplomatic and commercial representation.
No evidence has emerged that the event was organised, funded or hosted by Israel, or that Ambassador Jibril had any planned engagement with the Israeli ambassador.
Somalia-Israel Relations: The Wider Context
The Somalia-Kenya diplomatic episode reflects the growing pressure on Somali officials to visibly distance themselves from Israel following the Somaliland recognition dispute. For Mogadishu, Israel’s decision to recognise Somaliland strikes at the foundation of Somali statehood – a matter of constitutional and political gravity that has placed Somalia’s foreign policy on a heightened state of alert.
Whether Ambassador Jibril returns to his post in Nairobi will depend on the outcome of the Foreign Ministry’s internal review. Somalia’s Foreign Ministry and the Office of the President had not issued a formal public statement at the time of publication.
