It’s Wednesday, 27 May, and this is News Bite with Marcelle Gordon.

The first group of Ghanaian nationals accepting voluntary repatriation are on their way home after more than 800 Ghanaians registered for evacuation following weeks of anti-illegal immigration marches in South Africa. Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quashie, confirmed that the first group of 300 Ghanaian nationals left from OR Tambo on Wednesday, with another group expected to depart on Sunday.

Also today, Joe “Ferrari” Sibanyoni’s extortion and money laundering case has been re-enrolled and moved to the Delmas Magistrate’s Court after the National Prosecuting Authority filed a complaint against Chief Magistrate Tuletu Tonjeni. The IEC has launched its “Get Up. Show Up. Vote” campaign ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections, with voter registration set for 20 and 21 June and election day scheduled for 4 November.

We’re also watching Joburg’s R5.2-billion Eskom debt, with Mayor Dada Morero assuring residents there will be no power cuts in the city as national government steps in to help settle the dispute. At Charlotte Maxeke Hospital, Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi says disciplinary action is already unfolding after failures to repair the hospital, with the matter escalated to the Auditor-General over systemic financial breaches and missing accounting records.

On the economy, South African consumers are bracing for a possible interest-rate hike as the Reserve Bank Monetary Policy Committee prepares to announce its decision on Thursday, with global cost pressures linked to the US-Israel war on Iran and tensions in the Gulf. Abroad, the White House UFC fighting cage is taking shape on the South Lawn ahead of America’s 250th Independence Day celebrations.

Bafana Bafana are gearing up for Mexico as coach Hugo Broos prepares to name his 26-man FIFA World Cup squad. Broos is set to retire after the tournament, while captain Ronwen Williams helps lead South Africa back to the global stage for the first time since 2010.

And finally, Bafana are back on the world stage, and the country is already in full tournament mode. South Africans do not just watch a big international sports event, we emotionally move in.

That’s your News Bite for 27 May.
