No More Removing Shoes and Belts at Airports by August — President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama says travellers using Ghana’s airports will no longer be required to remove their belts and shoes during security checks once new screening equipment is installed in August 2026.

Speaking at the official launch of Ghana’s new e‑visa platform on Monday, May 25, the President announced a series of upgrades aimed at modernising airport security and improving passenger convenience.

“In August, we’re receiving and installing new equipment to end the inconvenience of removing shoes and belts at our airports,” he assured.

He added that government is already rolling out advanced technologies to streamline screening procedures.

“As I speak, new 3D scanners are being installed at Terminals 2 and 3. These scanners will eliminate the need to remove laptops and liquids from hand luggage when you travel.”

Part of a Broader Digital Transformation

President Mahama said the e‑visa initiative is part of a wider effort to build a technology‑driven, citizen‑centred public service, making travel to and from Ghana more efficient and accessible.

He noted that Ghana’s new visa policy aligns with Pan‑African ideals and places the country among African states — including Rwanda, Kenya, Benin and Seychelles — that have adopted progressive visa regimes to promote integration and mobility across the continent.
