The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has activated emergency operation centres across the country as heavy rains continue to cause flooding in parts of Accra, leaving homes submerged and destroying property.
The move is aimed at improving coordination of rescue and relief efforts, with response teams placed on standby in flood-prone communities nationwide as the rainy season intensifies.
Speaking to Citi News, a Senior Officer at NADMO’s Inspectorate Department, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, said the organisation’s decentralised structure allows for rapid deployment of emergency teams once distress calls are received.
“The emergency response team is always on standby and they are always prepared. Once we receive a report, they move to the area to assist,” he said.
He added that the teams are equipped to support evacuations and also help pump water out of affected homes.
Alhaji Abubakar further disclosed that NADMO is rolling out a mobile application to enhance flood reporting and improve response times. The app will allow residents to share precise locations of flood incidents in local languages.
“We are launching an app at the NADMO headquarters for people to be able to give us the right location of every flooding situation. You can speak Twi, Ewe and any local dialect. This will help in effective flood management,” he explained.
