Supporters of Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak have launched a fierce counterattack against NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah over comments linking the party’s 2024 electoral victory to the controversial 2023 Minority Leadership reshuffle.
In a strongly worded statement signed by Nasir Gardenboi, spokesperson to Hon. Muntaka and Communications Officer for the NDC Asawase Constituency, the camp accused Asiedu Nketiah of attempting to “rewrite history” and unfairly diminish the contributions of key party figures for political convenience.
The statement described the Chairman’s remarks during his thank-you tour in Tamale South as “unfortunate, unnecessary, and divisive,” warning that senior party leaders should not sacrifice party unity in pursuit of personal political ambitions.
According to the statement, claiming that the reshuffle alone delivered victory for the NDC and President John Dramani Mahama is both misleading and disrespectful to the thousands of party faithful who worked tirelessly across the country.
“Political frustration should never become a basis for rewriting history or unfairly attacking colleagues in pursuit of power,” the statement declared.
The Muntaka camp also mounted a strong defense of former Minority leaders including Haruna Iddrisu, Muntaka Mubarak, and Cassiel Ato Forson, insisting their sacrifices during difficult moments in Parliament cannot be erased from the NDC’s political legacy.
The statement pointed to the tense January 7, 2021 parliamentary showdown that produced the Speaker of the 8th Parliament as proof of the strategic leadership and resilience displayed by the old Minority leadership team.
In one of its sharpest attacks, the statement suggested that many Northerners and Muslims within the NDC are becoming increasingly uncomfortable with what they perceive as a pattern of unfair treatment and public attacks against respected leaders from their bloc.
It warned that such perceptions could deepen cracks within the party if not addressed with urgency and maturity.
Despite the escalating tensions, the statement reaffirmed the commitment of Muntaka Mubarak and Haruna Iddrisu to serving diligently under President Mahama’s administration.
The statement ended with a direct call on Asiedu Nketiah and other party leaders to use their platforms to heal divisions rather than “reopen old wounds” capable of destabilizing the party ahead of future political battles.
