Bank of Ghana announces new reserve requirement as banking sector assets hit GHC493.9 billion

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced a new uniform Cash Reserve Ratio of 20 percent for banks, effective June 4, 2026, as part of measures to strengthen liquidity management within the financial sector.

The decision was announced at the end of the central bank’s 130th Monetary Policy Committee meeting in Accra.

Governor of the Bank, Johnson Asiama said the country’s banking sector continued to record significant improvement, supported by stronger credit growth, improved asset quality, and higher capital buffers.

According to the committee, total banking sector assets grew by 26.6 percent year-on-year to GHC493.9 billion in April 2026, driven largely by investments, deposits, and shareholders’ funds.

Private sector credit also rebounded strongly, growing by 28.7 percent in nominal terms compared to 19.9 percent during the same period last year. In real terms, credit growth stood at 24.5 percent after recording a contraction in 2025.

The committee further noted improvements in the sector’s solvency position, with the Capital Adequacy Ratio rising to 22.3 percent from 17.5 percent a year earlier.

The Non-Performing Loan ratio also declined from 23.6 percent to 18 percent, although the Bank warned that elevated credit risk remains a concern and urged banks to comply strictly with regulatory guidelines.

Meanwhile, the external sector remained resilient despite the impact of geopolitical tensions. Ghana’s Gross International Reserves rose to 14.4 billion dollars as of 18 May, 2026, providing 5.7 months of import cover.

The cedi, however, depreciated by 8.4 percent against the US dollar between January and May 2026 due largely to energy sector demand and dividend payments by some corporate institutions.
