He wants favour from Bawumia

Lamtiig Apanga (L) says Afenyo-Markin (R) is losing respect with the NPP Lamtiig Apanga (L) says Afenyo-Markin (R) is losing respect with the NPP

The Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Gaming Commission, Lamtiig Apanga, has taken a swipe at the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, following the latter’s recent criticism of a Circuit Court judge handling the case involving the NPP’s Bono Regional Chairman, Abronye DC.

It would be recalled that after the Circuit Court denied Abronye bail because he could commit further offences if granted bail, Afenyo-Markin took to social media to criticise the judge.

In a series of posts directed at the Circuit Court 9 judge, Afenyo-Markin stated that the judge had shown “no respect for the law and the rights of citizens.”

He also accused the judge of being politically biased, adding that “there is a pattern in the conduct of the Circuit Court 9 judge in political cases that come before him.”

Reacting to Afenyo-Markin’s comments, Lamtiig Apanga described the Minority Leader as someone who is gradually losing respect in the eyes of the public and even within his own political party.

According to Apanga, Afenyo-Markin is a respected lawyer and political figure who should conduct himself accordingly and avoid engaging in what he described as cheap politics.

“There are certain lines we do not expect people to cross. Someone like the Minority Leader is not an ordinary lawyer or an ordinary citizen. We have high expectations of him because he is the Minority Leader and has been a lawyer for more than 20 years.

“He has been in private practice for a long time and is held in high esteem. He leads the NPP in Parliament, and many people look up to him. Young lawyers and students also look up to him. If he can go out there and attack a judge in the manner he did, then it is most unfortunate, to say the least. He went too low, and I think he is gradually losing his respect, whether he realises it or not,” he said.

Lamtiig Apanga further alleged that Afenyo-Markin’s recent public outbursts on legal matters may be linked to efforts to win favour from former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to him, the Minority Leader is struggling to remain politically relevant within the NPP, which he believes explains his recent criticisms.

“I understand he is facing challenges in remaining relevant within the NPP, especially after supporting Kennedy Agyapong, who lost the primary. He is trying very hard to win the endorsement of Bawumia to maintain his position as Minority Leader, so he feels the need to constantly stay relevant,” he added.
