U17 AFCON: Ghana’s Black Starlets stunned by 10-man Senegal

By Simon Asare, GNA

Accra, May 18, GNA – Ghana’s Black Starlets suffered a 1-0 defeat to Senegal in their second Group D match at the 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

Ghana had the ball in the net early in the game, through Eric Adu Gyamfi, but the effort was ruled out after a video review, halting what appeared to be a bright start.

The Black Starlets responded positively to the setback and dominated large spells of the first half, creating chances and putting sustained pressure on the Senegalese defence.

Senegal were reduced to 10 men following a red card, handing Ghana a numerical advantage for much of the game.

Ghana had a clear opportunity to take the lead when Mark Aboagye was fouled in the penalty area, but Isaac Barfo failed to convert from the spot.

Despite being a man down, Senegal adopted a more defensive approach after the break, sitting deep and relying on counterattacks.

They capitalised on one such break to score the decisive goal.

Ghana pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages but were unable to find a breakthrough against a resolute Senegal defence.

The defeat leaves Ghana with work to do in Group D, although they remain in contention for qualification.

The Black Starlets would face South Africa in their final group game, where victory could secure progression and a place at the FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar later this year.
