Key Facts

  • Appearance: 6th
  • Last Appearance: 2025
  • Best Performance: Runners-up (2015)

South Africa head into the TotalEnergies CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations 2026 as COSAFA champions, carrying strong momentum after an impressive and dominant regional campaign.

The Amajimbos secured their place in Morocco by clinching the COSAFA U-17 title, defeating Angola 2-1 in a high-intensity final in Harare to lift their fourth title at this level and underline their growing strength in youth football.

How They Qualified

South Africa emerged as champions of the COSAFA qualifiers, showcasing attacking flair and tactical discipline throughout the tournament.

They made a fast start in the final against Angola, with Omphemetse Sekgoto opening the scoring in just the fifth minute. After Angola equalised through Pedro Antonio in the second half, South Africa responded with resilience, as Siyabonga Mbongo struck the decisive goal late on to seal a 2-1 victory.

Their campaign also featured emphatic performances, including a 7-0 demolition of Comoros in the semi-finals, highlighting their attacking depth and quality.

History in the Competition

South Africa have been consistent participants at the U-17 AFCON, with their best performance coming in 2015 when they finished as runners-up.

While they have not lifted the continental title, their continued presence at the tournament reflects a strong youth development system that continues to produce exciting talent.

Their sixth appearance offers another opportunity to build on past success and push for continental glory.

Key Players to Watch

  • Thandanani Mhlongo (Forward) – A prolific attacker who scored five goals in the qualifiers, making him one of South Africa’s key offensive threats.
  • Mpho Molepo (Midfielder) – A creative and energetic midfielder with an eye for goal, contributing both in build-up play and finishing.
  • Inganathi Simama (Forward) – A versatile forward known for his movement and ability to create scoring opportunities.

Coach & Tactical Approach

South Africa are coached by Vela Khumalo, who has built a dynamic and attacking team capable of dominating possession while remaining disciplined defensively.

His tactical approach is centred on:

  • High-tempo attacking football, with quick ball movement
  • Pressing from the front, forcing opponents into mistakes
  • Structured defensive organisation, ensuring balance across the pitch

Khumalo has successfully blended flair with discipline, creating a team that is both entertaining and effective.

Tournament Expectations

South Africa will aim to progress beyond the group stage and secure qualification for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2026 by finishing among the top ten teams.

Given their form in the qualifiers and attacking firepower, they will also harbour ambitions of reaching the knockout stages and potentially challenging for the title.

If they maintain their consistency and composure in key moments, South Africa could emerge as one of the strongest contenders from the COSAFA region.
