The United States Embassy in Ghana has underscored the need for deeper collaboration and knowledge sharing between Ghanaian and American institutions, particularly in the healthcare sector, to strengthen capacity, innovation, and service delivery.

Speaking at a media engagement at a Medical Readiness Exercise (MEDREX) in Accra, Press Attaché and Acting Public Affairs Officer at the U.S. Embassy, Matthew Asada, emphasised that sustained partnerships among governments, medical institutions, and private organisations are key to building resilient health systems.

He noted that the exercise forms part of broader cooperation between Ghana and the United States across multiple sectors.

“Our collaboration goes beyond MEDREX. We are working together on humanitarian missions, law enforcement cooperation, and cybersecurity efforts, ensuring criminals are prosecuted both here and in the United States.

“We are also partnering on global platforms, including preparations toward a successful World Cup,” he stated.

He added that joint military exercises, including MEDREX and other engagements across Africa, are critical to improving interoperability between U.S. and Ghanaian forces.

MEDREX is being coordinated by the U.S. Army Southern European Task Force Africa and focuses on preparing U.S. military health personnel to operate effectively in non-traditional and resource-constrained environments.
On the Ghanaian side, Commander James Emmanuel Kwegyir Aggrey-Orleans, a member of the MEDREX Ghana coordination team, highlighted the benefits of the collaboration.

According to him, the exercise has enhanced knowledge exchange and exposed personnel to best practices, particularly in operating within limited-resource settings.

“We are learning a lot from each other. Beyond the technical knowledge, building personal relationships is key. When you know your counterparts, cooperation becomes more effective, and that strengthens future engagements,” he noted.

He added that the bonds formed during the exercise extend beyond MEDREX, contributing to long-term cooperation between Ghanaian and U.S. medical teams.

MEDREX 2026 forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen international military and health partnerships, while improving preparedness and response capabilities in diverse operational environments.
