Survival Meets SA in “Naked and Afraid’s Global Showdown”

The world’s toughest survivalists are heading to Zululand, where South Africa’s raw and untamed beauty becomes the ultimate test in “Naked and Afraid: Global Showdown”.

South Africa (05 May 2026) – One of the world’s most extreme survival shows is heading back to our shores, and this time, it’s bigger than anything we’ve seen before. “Naked and Afraid: Global Showdown” is officially being filmed in Zululand, turning one of South Africa’s most breathtaking regions into the ultimate battleground for global survivalists.

Premiering on May 17, 2026, the brand-new series brings together fourteen All-Stars from across the globe, including Australia, Brazil, Mexico and the United States, all competing for national pride and the biggest cash prize in the franchise’s history (over R3 million). It’s a first for the show… and it’s all unfolding right here at home.

“Seven teams, each representing their homeland, will be pushed to their absolute limits across three of Zululand’s toughest environments. From scorching savannahs where leopards and rhinos roam, to thick marshlands ruled by hippos and crocodiles, and even into the powerful Indian Ocean filled with Zambezi sharks, every step is a test of instinct, endurance and teamwork,” the press release stated.

Over 40 days, the rules remain as brutal as ever. The contestants will start with no food, water or clothes. Just raw survival skills and the ability to adapt, think and endure. But this season raises the stakes even further with a brand-new scoring system. Teams will earn points by completing survival tasks and facing off in direct challenges, unlocking tools and advantages along the way. The weakest teams will have to fight for their place, knowing that every decision could mean the difference between staying in the game or going home.

The line-up includes:

  • Australia: Ky Furneaux and Alexa Towersey
  • Brazil: Rene Murad and Marina Fukushima
  • Mexico: Pablo Melin and Fernanda Perez
  • Texas: Jeff Zausch and Kerra Bennett
  • USA East: Matt Wright and Gabby Balassone
  • USA South: Frank Eytcheson and Teal Bulthuis
  • USA West: Dan Link and Rachel Strohl

While this season doesn’t feature any South African teams, Mzansi has made its mark on Naked and Afraid before. Warrick Harvey has become one of the most recognisable South Africans in the franchise, having survived 21 days naked in an extremely remote part of Zambia. And of course, South Africa itself has long been part of the Naked and Afraid story. From Limpopo to Oribi Gorge, several episodes of both Naked and Afraid and Naked and Afraid XL have been filmed locally. While many of the contestants have come from abroad, the wildlife and the raw intensity of our natural environments have consistently taken centre stage.

This latest chapter simply amplifies that.

You can catch Naked and Afraid: Global Showdown when it premieres on May 17, 2026, on the Discovery Channel (DStv Channel 121), with a DStv Premium subscription. Fans can also join the global conversation by following the show online and using the hashtag #NakedAndAfraid.

It’s a global competition, with international stars, high stakes and a massive prize… but the real headline is this: the world is watching South Africa do what it does best.
