Ghana’s Kofi-Kyereh was taken away from the pitch following a serious leg injury for over three years.

The attacking midfielder suffered a severe anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during training with German club SC Freiburg in February 2023. He was near to a sensational return in 2024, only to experience another setback in his recovery during preseason.

It sidelined him for over three years before returning to training in January 2026.

The Ghana international resumed full team training with SC Freiburg in January and has begun playing with the Freiburg U23 team to regain match fitness as at April.

His injury made him miss significant time for both SC Freiburg and the Ghana Black Stars, with his recovery lasting over three years.

Speaking in an interview with Joy Sports, revealed he battled to retire during the dark days but received a surprise call from former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah who encouraged and motivated him to stay strong during his rehabilitation process.

He acknowledged Appiah’s call and appreciated his efforts, admitting Stephen Appiah is a nice guy.

“During my time in rehab, he [Stephen Appiah] called me. I was so surprised and honoured to receive his call. He’s such a nice guy”

“He gave me some really encouraging words and motivated me to come back stronger,” he said.

Kofi-Kyere since returning has featured three times for Freiburg U23 team, boosting of two assists.

He’s expected to return to full fitness and possibly be available for selection to the 2026 FIFA World Cup slated for this summer.
