Why has politics become such a lucrative business in Ghana?

A collage of political party flags A collage of political party flags

Many Ghanaians are struggling with all their heart, soul, mind and might, to become an active member or an activist of a political party in Ghana. They especially aspire to, or become, members of the alternating ruling political parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) or the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

For them to be seen as active members after registering with the parties and paying their yearly membership dues, they become very vocal, sometimes activists, partisans, and champion the course of the party for the party leaders to see them as clearly doing the work of the party to pave way for the party to win general elections.

Some people will go to the extent of throwing dust into people’s eyes, saying good things about their party, promising their hearers heaven and earth, should their party come to power, even when they know from the bottom of their heart that they are lying to their audience.

Why do they do this? Is it not because they have come to the realisation that the quickest way to make most money in Ghana is through politics? Yes, it is obvious and an indisputable fact that doing active politics has enriched many ardent party members, especially those in NDC.

By becoming an outspoken activist engaged in all manners of activities to bring your party to power, you stand the chance of landing a position that opens avenues for you to acquire immense wealth without wiping a sweat from your forehead, illegal wealth, of course.

If this was not so, would a blood sibling deny his senior brother his support to side with his brother’s opponent during the recent past political campaign that enabled then NDC flag bearer and presidential aspirant Mr John Dramani Mahama to win the NDC flagbearership to eventually bring him to power in the 2024 general elections?

Politics has become the gateway to acquisition of enormous wealth in Ghana. If this was not so, why do political aspirants for various political positions within their parties try to undermine, if not sabotage, each other at the least opportunity they get?

Ghana will never develop to guarantee the collective interests of all if we continue to allow some well-placed but selfish and greedy individuals to exploit the politics to their selfish interests.

Who can point out a single Ghanaian politician that has not been corrupt when offered a position in Ghana, thus, has not indulged in malfeasances or used their position to undeservingly assist their friends and family to acquire immense wealth, whether legally or illegally?

This is happening in both NPP and NDC. Right from the District Chief Executives through Ministers to the Presidents, who has not illegally availed themselves of their political positions in one way or the other?

Because of the corrupt nature of Ghanaian politics, the nation’s water bodies, virgin forests, and fertile and arable lands have come to see unprecedented ongoing devastations.

Why are many Ghanaians fighting to become active members of a political party, going to the extremes of slighting their political opponents on intent to gain advantage over them?

Ghanaians are not good actors and actresses of politics, compared to their contemporary whites.

Look at the shameless Ghanaian media presenters and hosts that partisanly attacked the NPP when they were in power but have kept mute now that the NDC are in power and probably doing worse things. Have they lost their voice and eyesight? I just don’t want to mention names.

Politics in Ghana needs a thorough clean up to be able to serve the collective interests of the citizenry. Ghana politics has been inundated with lies, corruption, insults, enmity, and acts of shortsightedness for far too long to be good.

When will the Ghanaian learn to do better politics of pursuing more of a good name than riches? Shame though!

All Ghanaian politicians and fanatic party activists have erred and come short of the trust of the Ghanaian poor masses.

Clean up your act, all ye Ghanaian politicians and party members, the writer advises.
