One person has been confirmed dead following an armed attack on a passenger bus on Saturday, May 2, 2026.

The vehicle, with registration number AS 4941-25, was travelling from Zebilla in the Upper East Region to Tamale in the Northern Region when it came under attack at Nasia, near Walewale in the North East Region.

The North East Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Robert Anibiik, confirmed the incident to MyJoyOnline but said details on casualties were still being verified at the time of reporting.

Eyewitnesses and preliminary accounts indicate that the assailants emerged from nearby bushes along the roadside and opened fire on the vehicle, forcing it to stop.

During the attack, bullets struck the bus, fatally injuring one passenger who died at the scene.

Five other passengers sustained injuries, including wounds from gunfire and shattered glass, and were taken to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.

The body of the deceased has been deposited at a local mortuary pending preservation and autopsy.

Concerns have been growing among commuters and transport operators over safety on northern highways, particularly during late hours.

Police have urged the public to remain calm but vigilant, assuring that investigations are ongoing and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
