Minority recalculates Bank of Ghana loss to GHC44bn

The Minority in Parliament has disputed the Bank of Ghana’s reported operating loss of 15.6 billion cedis for 2025, arguing the true deficit is significantly higher due to accounting adjustments.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday (3 May), Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, MP for Ofoase/Ayirebi said the central bank’s actual operating loss stood at about 34.9 billion cedis, citing what he described as the use of “artificial recognition” to shift portions of the deficit into other comprehensive income.

He added that when proceeds from gold sales are factored in, the total comprehensive loss rises to nearly 44 billion cedis.

“The government says the loss is 15.6 billion cedis. The true operating loss of the Bank is actually 34.9 billion cedis,” he said.

The Bank of Ghana’s 2025 annual report showed losses widening from 9.48 billion cedis in 2024, marking the fourth consecutive year of deficits following losses of 60.9 billion cedis in 2022 and 10.5 billion cedis in 2023.

Despite the criticism, the minority commended the central bank for publishing its financial statements, describing the disclosure as a step toward transparency.
