Multi-millionaire Ibrahim Mahama has paid the first $2 million of a $5 million pledge through his company, Engineers and Planners, to support Ghana’s push for the 2026 World Cup.
The payment was formally presented on April 30, 2026, to Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem, although officials confirmed the funds had already been transferred ahead of the ceremony.
“I’m happy to say that today, they are here to redeem part of the pledge of $2 million. They have already paid the money into the account, but we are going to do the symbolic presentation,” he said.
The fundraising initiative aims to cover key preparatory needs, including training, logistics, infrastructure, and international engagements ahead of the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Broad private sector and celebrity backing
Support has also come from across Ghana’s private sector and entertainment industry. Gold Fields Ghana has committed $2 million, with another $1 million expected, while KGL Group pledged GH10 million, half already paid.
Other contributions include $2 million from Christian Salamony Game Technology, GH2 million and a GH20 million insurance package from Serene Insurance, and over $200,000 combined from musicians Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy, alongside a $1 million anonymous donation.
Additional personal donations include GH₵240,000 from Alex Okyere of KAF Company Ltd and $300,000 from Timeline and Innovation Company.
So far, the campaign has raised more than $12 million toward a $30 million target. With Ghana drawn into a challenging group, the urgency for early, well-funded preparation is growing, and the remaining $3 million from Engineers and Planners is expected to be the single largest private contribution.
