The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) has elected a new national executive and marked two decades of championing smallholder farmers’ rights, concluding a three-day Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the University for Development Studies (UDS) campus in Tamale from April 21 to 23, 2026.
The event drew more than 300 farmer delegates from over 100 districts across all 16 regions of Ghana and was held under the theme: “From Advocacy to Action: Consolidating 20 Years of Farmers’ Voices to Shape Ghana’s Agricultural Future.”
Mr. Douglas Annor, who previously served as the Ashanti Regional focal person, was elected National President. Madam Latifu Afushetu from the North East Region was elected National Vice President, while Mr. Jambedu Ibrahim from the Upper East Region was elected General Secretary. Mr. Vincent Lawie Bonzo from the Upper West Region and Madam Martha Ama Banini from the Volta Region were elected National Youth Organizer and National Women’s Organizer respectively.
In his acceptance speech, Mr. Annor pledged committed leadership and reaffirmed PFAG’s dedication to advancing the welfare of its more than one million member farmers. He called on government to address market gluts, high input costs, limited irrigation, post-harvest losses, and the impact of illegal mining on farmlands and water bodies, describing these as urgent threats to agricultural productivity and farmer livelihoods.
The 20th anniversary commemoration traced PFAG’s growth from a modest founding in 2005 into the largest apex farmer-based organization in Ghana. Key founding members were honoured with citations recognising their contributions to the association’s establishment and sustained growth.
Minister for Food and Agriculture Eric Opoku delivered the keynote address, commending PFAG for becoming a formidable organization and urging members to move beyond advocacy toward tangible action. He outlined government’s commitment to modernising agriculture and partnering farmers to improve productivity. He also pledged an additional 40,000 bags of fertilizer to boost the production capacities of PFAG members across the country.
The Special Guest of Honour, Naa Alhassan Mahama, Chief of Mion, read a message on behalf of Ya-Na Abukari II, Overlord of the Dagbon Traditional Area, reaffirming the paramount chief’s support for smallholder farmers and calling for effective implementation of agricultural policies to benefit farmers at the grassroots level.
The AGM also served as a platform for constitutional amendments and strategic planning to guide the association over the next four years.
