Sen. Seriake Dickson has described the defection of former Senator Kabir Marafa from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as strategic and symbolic of a broader political realignment ahead of upcoming electoral activities.

Dickson spoke at a high-level gathering attended by party leaders, stakeholders and supporters of NDC where Marafa was received on Tuesday.

According to him, the defection of the former Zamfara senator marks a significant shift in the North-West political landscape and is expected to boost the NDC’s growing influence in the region.

Dickson, who the is the National Leader commended Marafa’s record of public service, integrity and commitment to justice, describing him as a “strong and dependable force” whose experience will strengthen the party’s vision of inclusive governance.

Marafa had in August 2025, resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and later joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on April 8.

Dickson, who represents Bayelsa West Senatorial District and a former governor of Bayelsa, said that the NDC was founded on principles of service, unity and people-oriented leadership, with a focus on addressing insecurity, economic hardship and social inequality across Nigeria.

He said that the party remained committed to building a platform that accommodates all Nigerians—particularly youths, women and vulnerable groups—while restoring public trust in governance.

The National Chairman of the NDC, Sen. Moses Cleopas, described Marafa’s defection as a milestone for the party.

“Today marks another milestone for our party, another feather added to our cap.

“This rescue mission, as we see it, was initiated by God through His political servant—our mentor and leader of the party.

“Today, there is hardly anyone conversant with Nigerian politics who does not know distinguished Sen. Marafa. He has come to identify with his political ally, friend and brother, to join this movement and help pilot it to safety.

“On behalf of the National Working Committee, we express our joy. We are glad. Marafa’s arrival also signals that others may follow.”

Also speaking, the party’s National Vice Chairman (North-West), Mohammed Bakinzuwo, praised leaders who uphold justice and accountability.

“We take pride in the contributions of exemplary leaders, especially those who have stood firmly for truth and justice.

“Such leaders do not betray trust, do not oppress and do not demean the people. May God grant them more strength and wisdom.”

In his remarks, Marafa said his decision followed extensive consultations and reflection on recent political developments, particularly internal challenges within the APC.

He said that while he and his supporters had contributed significantly to the party’s past successes, they felt increasingly sidelined and underappreciated.

“Politics must be about inclusion, recognition and opportunity to serve.

“When those values are missing, it becomes necessary to seek a platform that aligns with one’s principles,” he said.

Marafa described his defection as a bold and necessary step and called on his supporters across Zamfara and the wider North-West to join the NDC and actively participate in its activities.

He also emphasized the importance of complying with electoral regulations, urging aspiring candidates to ensure proper registration in line with the guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“The law is clear; you can only belong to one political party. Proper registration is critical for anyone intending to contest elections,” he said.

Marafa had represented Zamfara Central Senatorial District in the 7th and 8th Assemblies. (NAN)
