Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has held high-level diplomatic talks with his South African counterpart following viral videos alleging xenophobic attacks on Ghanaians in South Africa.

According to the minister, he spoke directly with Ronald Lamola, who expressed sympathy for the victims and assured that full-scale investigations are underway. The South African government is also expected to brief African ambassadors later today as part of efforts to address the situation.

Mr Ablakwa disclosed that he has been in constant contact with Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quarshie, to coordinate Ghana’s response. He confirmed that officials have located the main victim captured in the widely circulated video and are providing consular assistance.

“The victim is doing very well, and no Ghanaian life has been lost,” the minister said, urging calm among the Ghanaian public.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Ghanaians both at home and abroad, stressing that the administration of John Dramani Mahama remains resolute in ensuring the protection of all citizens.

Mr Ablakwa also called for unity across the continent, cautioning against allowing isolated acts of violence to undermine Africa’s shared values.

“The overwhelming majority of Africans are united and share an unbreakable bond. We shall not be divided by the hatred of a few fringe elements,” he said.

The development comes amid growing concern over the safety of foreign nationals in South Africa, with authorities under pressure to act swiftly to prevent any escalation.
