“Most of our customers are going to feel the pinch of the increase in the fuel price and we are urging the government to think about refining our crude oil in Kenya.”

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), which reviews fuel prices monthly, said the price of a liter of petrol rose 16%  to 206.97 Kenyan shillings, or about $1.60.

Diesel prices saw the sharpest increase, climbing 24% to 206.84 shillings ($1.60) a liter, while kerosene prices were left unchanged at 152.78 shillings ($1.18).

EPRA said the increases were driven by higher import costs, noting that prices of imported fuel products had risen by nearly 69% on international markets.

In Nairobi, motorists rushed to petrol stations hours before the new prices took effect, leading to long queues across the city.
