NPP accuses judiciary of partisanship in Baba Amando remand case

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused sections of the judiciary of partisanship, citing what it describes as the routine remand of accused persons without sufficient justification.

The criticism follows the arrest and subsequent remand of the party’s Bono Regional Communications Officer, Baba Amando.

According to the NPP, there was no legal basis for the remand order, emphasizing that the presiding judge issued the directive despite the police not requesting it.

Speaking at a press conference, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Koduah, described the development as “shameful,” raising concerns about what he sees as judicial overreach.

“Some judges have turned themselves into remand judges. The only thing that they do is to remand people or opponents who criticise this government. It is a shame to the bench also, that as judges who are supposed to be custodians and conscience of our rule of law to protect the vulnerable, have now become NDC even more than the NDC people,” he said.

Meanwhile, the party has also accused Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno (IGP) of targeting individuals who criticize the government.

“It is sad that the IGP Yohuno has created an office whose duty is just to be combing around social media to identify people who criticize the government and in midnight and early hours, they go and arrest these people to such an extent that even where the constitution says that when a person is arrested, detained or restricted, it must be communicated immediately to the person his crime, In most cases they don’t,” he said.
