Pastor Jimmy Irungu has stunned Kenyans after pulling off a dramatic stunt midway through his ongoing 80-hour sleeping challenge.

The preacher rose to fame earlier this year after undertaking an 80-hour tree-hugging challenge aimed at raising cancer awareness.

He made headlines after collapsing at the 79th hour and being rushed to the hospital, just short of completing the feat.

Why did Pastor Jimmy Irungu lie in a casket?

On Friday, April 3, he began another endurance challenge, this time an 80-hour sleep marathon, calling on the government to declare cancer a national disaster.

However, at around the 50th hour, the pastor suddenly disappeared from the bed where he had been resting, leaving onlookers puzzled.

Moments later, he resurfaced in a casket that had been transported in a hearse. The preacher was seen lying inside the sealed casket, which was then carried by a group of onlookers and placed next to the bed he had been using.

SThe unusual scene drew attention as members of the public gathered around, with some viewing him in a manner similar to a funeral setting, as the casket remained closed and he lay with his eyes shut.

Throughout the challenge, Pastor Jimmy has maintained that his goal is to highlight the suffering of cancer patients, explaining that he wants to demonstrate the pain and emotional toll experienced by patients in hospital beds as they undergo treatment.

“One day cancer will die,” has been his consistent message throughout the marathon challenge.

TUKO.co.ke previously reported that environmental activist Truphena Muthoni, who initiated the viral tree-hugging challenge, submitted proof of her 72-hour attempt to the Guinness World Records for consideration.

Muthoni completed the endurance feat on December 11, 2025, surpassing her earlier 48-hour record, which had already received global recognition.

She noted that she had forwarded all required evidence for her latest attempt to be evaluated for official approval by Guinness World Records.
