Enforced disappearances in Kenya: Male versus female

Enforced disappearances in Kenya: Male vs female/WILLIAM WANYOIKE

A new report on enforced disappearances in Kenya shows a troubling pattern, with men and youth bearing the brunt of the cases between 2022 and 2025.

According to the Missing Voices 2025 Annual Report, male victims consistently outnumber females across all years reviewed.

In 2022, 20 men were reported missing compared to just two women.

The trend continued in 2023 with 10 male cases and no recorded female cases.

The situation escalated sharply in 2024, when disappearances peaked at 45 men and nine women, marking the highest figures within the period under review. In 2025, six male cases have been recorded so far.

The data highlights a persistent gender disparity, with men remaining the primary targets of enforced disappearances.

Youth are also disproportionately affected, pointing to broader concerns about vulnerability among younger populations.

The findings underscore growing calls for accountability, stronger oversight of security operations, and urgent measures to address human rights violations in the country.
