Former Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, has lamented that Nigeria’s politics has become a platform for personal enrichment, saying “it’s time for leaders to prioritise serving the people.”
Adebayo made the statement at a meeting on Wednesday in Osun State with prominent leaders, including Afenifere, Arewa Consultative forum (ACF), Northern Elders Forum (NEF) representatives, aimed at rebuilding a national philosophy anchored on social democracy.
He noted that Nigeria’s founding leaders worked together to secure independence, but military intervention disrupted the foundation, leading to politics influenced by military rule or post-military habits.
He stressed that politics should serve the people, not personal interests, referencing historical movements and leaders, which prioritised public service and national progress.
“We are reminding Nigerians that good governance is the purpose of politics. The best for us as a country is to return to fairness, inclusivity, and accountability.
“The initiative seeks to ensure leaders and citizens understand the social contract that politics demands, focusing on the greatest good for the greatest number of Nigerians.
“By reviving these ideals, Nigerians can move away from selfish politics and focus on serving the nation,” he said.
