Why Nigerian SMEs Need a Strong Online Presence to Survive

Small and medium enterprises in Nigeria risk losing customers and growth opportunities if they fail to build a strong digital presence, a digital entrepreneur, Adedapo Micheal, has said, stressing that online visibility has become essential for business survival in today’s economy.

Micheal, Chief Executive Officer of Dleading Web Design Ltd, said the shift in consumer behaviour means most customers now search online before making purchasing decisions, making it critical for businesses to establish credible digital footprints.

According to him, businesses that are not visible online are effectively invisible to a large segment of potential customers. He noted that digital presence is no longer optional but a key driver of trust, customer acquisition and revenue growth.

“Today, most customers check online before engaging with any business. If your business is not visible online, it simply means you are missing out on many potential customers,” he said, adding that a strong online presence often serves as a company’s first impression.

He explained that SMEs commonly make avoidable mistakes that limit their online growth, including relying solely on social media platforms without owning websites, maintaining inconsistent branding, and failing to understand their target audience. Other challenges, he said, include poor search engine visibility and treating digital platforms casually rather than strategically.

While social media remains an important marketing tool, Michael warned that businesses should not depend entirely on it because platforms are controlled by third parties. He described websites as a business’s “digital property”, offering full brand control, professional credibility and improved visibility on search engines.

“The best approach is to combine social media with a functional website. One supports engagement while the other builds long-term credibility,” he said.

He also highlighted growing opportunities within Nigeria’s digital economy, noting that skills such as web design, graphic design, video editing, digital marketing, content creation and user interface and user experience design are increasingly valuable because they address real business needs.

According to him, young Nigerians can realistically earn income through digital platforms by working with international clients, offering online services, building personal brands and creating digital products, although success requires consistency and patience rather than expectations of quick wealth.

Michael identified lack of guidance, inconsistency, fear of starting and impatience as major factors preventing many young people from monetising their skills, urging them to focus on action and continuous learning.

He added that small businesses can begin their digital transformation without significant financial investment by starting with professional social media pages, building basic but functional websites, maintaining clear branding and creating consistent content. Listing businesses on platforms such as Google Business Profile can also improve discoverability, he said.

Looking ahead, Micheal said Nigerians should pay attention to emerging digital trends, including the growing demand for websites and online platforms, the expansion of e-commerce, the rise of artificial intelligence tools in business operations and content creation, and increasing opportunities in remote work and global freelancing.

He said the digital economy presents an opportunity for both businesses and individuals to expand beyond geographical limitations, urging stakeholders to embrace technology as a pathway to growth and competitiveness.

The digital entrepreneur and youth advocate said his mission through Dleading Web Design Ltd is to help businesses build strong online identities while empowering young Nigerians to view the internet as a platform for opportunity, innovation and economic advancement rather than entertainment alone.
