GHA announces temporary traffic measures on George Bush Highway

Motorists who use the N1 Highway, often called the George Bush Highway, should expect weekend disruptions as the Ghana Highway Authority announced that it will implement a revised traffic management plan for the expansion of the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange Bridge.

The Madina-Accra lane, particularly, was initially shut and traffic diverted on Monday, March 9, to allow contractors to undertake key construction works associated with the large-scale infrastructure project.

However, the diversion quickly resulted in unusually heavy congestion along the corridor, leaving thousands of motorists stuck in gridlock for several hours, for which reason the contractor suspended the closure.

The authority, in a statement on Friday, March 13, 2026, announced a revised measure to control the traffic, especially over the weekend.

In the statement, the authority noted that the northbound traffic from Accra to Madina will be temporarily closed during T-beam launching operations, with each closure expected to last between two and four hours.

The arrangement begins Saturday, 14 March 2026, and will continue on weekends and official public holidays over four months.

To maintain traffic flow, the Ghana Highway Authority added that the southbound carriageway from Madina to Accra will be reconfigured from four lanes to two lanes in each direction, allowing vehicles to move both ways.

The Ghana Highway Authority urged drivers to avoid the work area where possible, follow traffic signs, cooperate with officers, and plan their journeys.

Alternative routes have been mapped to help motorists bypass the construction zone:

  • Liberation Road to Tema: Use the Airport Bypass to Flowerpot Junction, then merge onto the Motorway toward Tema.
  • Liberation Road to East Legon: Travel through the Airport Bypass and the East Legon Underpass to access East Legon.
  • J.J. Rawlings Road to Liberation Road via George Bush Highway: Turn at Gulf House toward GIMPA Road, then Fiesta Royale Hotel Junction, and proceed along George Bush Highway past Villagio to Liberation Road.
  • Tema to Liberation Road: From Tema along the N1, continue through Tetteh Quarshie Interchange to Fiesta Royale Hotel Junction, turn left onto North Airport Road past Africa Regent Hotel to Liberation Road.

The authority said the proposed routes are intended to minimize delays, enhance safety, and maintain smooth traffic flow, and strongly encouraged drivers to use them to reduce pressure on the N1 corridor.

“We regret any inconvenience this may cause and count on the cooperation of the public,” the announcement stated.
