Flooding at South C Substation Disrupts Power Supply in Several Nairobi Estates – Kenya Power

Kenya Power has attributed the disruption in electricity supply experienced in several parts of Nairobi to flooding that damaged a key power facility following heavy rains that swept across the city on Friday night.

In a customer alert issued on Saturday, the utility company said the floods affected the South C substation after part of the facility’s boundary wall collapsed, allowing water to enter the installation.

Kenya Power noted that the incident interfered with electricity distribution to several residential and commercial areas in the Nairobi region.

Among the areas affected by the outage are South B, South C, Nairobi West, Madaraka Estate, and Langata.

Other locations impacted include Wilson Airport, Kenyatta Market, Ngumo Estate, the Industrial Area, and Uhuru Gardens.

The electricity supply company stated that its engineers have already been deployed to the site to assess the extent of the damage to electrical equipment and initiate repair works.

At the same time, in a bid to address the outage, the company said that, where possible, some customers are being switched to nearby substations to minimise disruption as restoration efforts continue.

“Our engineers are already on site, carefully assessing the damage to electrical equipment and working tirelessly to carry out the necessary tests and repairs. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank you for your patience and understanding. Kindly report any power incidents via *977#,” the company said.

This comes at a time when at least 10 people have been confirmed to have passed away in Nairobi after flash floods wreaked havoc in the capital on Friday night.

According to the Nairobi Police Commander, George Seda, eight of the victims were swept away by fast-rising floodwaters. Speaking in a phone interview with Radio Citizen on Saturday, March 7, Seda said police and emergency response teams are still gathering data and responding to emergencies.

This was coupled by delays that residents and motorists were forced to endure while commuting home, with a majority spending eight hours on various roads across the capital.

The situation was majorly contributed to by the lack of proper drainage systems within the capital, which caused flooding across Nairobi.

According to Seda, at least 71 vehicles were trapped or stranded across the city after major roads became impassable due to the heavy flooding.
