Ian von Memerty, the much-loved South African TV personality known for his energetic and lively presence, has ended his life at the age of 61.

Through his series “Dying for a Better Life”, posted on his Facebook and YouTube accounts, Von Memerty advocated for individuals to choose how and when their lives ended.

In one of his interviews, he cited extreme financial stress, the realities of ageing and the emotional toll of witnessing his parents’ prolonged and painful deaths as central to his reasoning.

He was a household name, particularly famous for hosting “Strictly Come Dancing” from 2006 to 2008 and serving as a judge on “SA’s Got Talent” from 2009 to 2012.

Von Memerty co-hosted “Muzik a la Carte” with Sandy Ngema early in his career.

A spokesperson confirmed the news in a brief statement that read: “We are sad to announce that our beloved Ian von Memerty passed away at the age of 61 in Johannesburg in the early hours of 23 February 2026.

“As a family, we have done everything we can to love & respect him on his journey.

“We ask for privacy & respect as we deal with our own pain, having lost someone we’ve loved very much.”

More recently, he sparked controversy in South Africa with the series “Dying for a Better Life,” which drew divided opinions.

The series, in his own words, was “a series where I look at the facts, choices, realities and responsibilities around old age and dying, and my belief that self-deliverance is a moral and legitimate option.”

Aside from his TV career, he is celebrated for his stage work, bagging 15 national theatre awards.

Some of his notable works include “A Handful of Keys”, “Hollywood Rocks”, “Broadway Rocks”, “Buddy” and “Grease”, to name a few.

Fans paid tribute to him on Facebook.

In a heartfelt message, Charl van Heyningen wrote: “My friend Ian von Memerty has died. Fear of an old age of poverty and physical decline led him to take his own life at the age of 61. Still strong, healthy and full of life.

“Apart from his family, we were the 4 chosen ones who spent his last hours with him via WhatsApp before he left us in the early hours of February 23 in a hotel room in Johannesburg.

“There is so much I can and want to say, but I will suffice by simply saying rest in peace, my friend. Our bond was strong. The laughter was legion. You were a mentor, an advisor, a bosom friend. And that crazy talent of yours. And that brain.

“I miss you. I wish you wanted the help I could offer.”

Sonja Campbell wrote: “A very brave decision to make. I trust people will not judge. Let him be at peace.”

Marianne Barnard posted: “So sad. My deepest condolences to the family. Wonderful and talented man. I had a lovely, memorable evening at one of his shows. I have beautiful photos too with him. R.I.P. Ian.”

“Oh, how sad to hear! I had been following his journey. He had the immense courage to speak his truth. May he rest in peace 🙏,” added Rhona Pool.

Anita Heyl shared: “I truly hope he experienced a gentle and peaceful release. Rest free, Ian🤍 Heartfelt condolences to his family. You loved him well.”

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Vivienne Lawrence, and their two children, Oscar and Kasvia. Von Memerty previously referred to his children as “the longest running and most fulfilling production of my life.”
