ICAG KASCITY Society brings relief to Kasoa newborns

The Kascity District Society of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG) has presented assorted items worth GH¢ 31, 626 to boost newborn and child care at the Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital.

The items included pulse oximeters, blood pressure monitors, thermometers, flow meters, a suction machine, a nebuliser, oxygen concentrators, a stadiometer, blankets, cot sheets, baby dresses, socks and caps, diapers, children’s toys, plastic chairs, a kettle, a trolley with bath, a water storage drum, tissue products, washing powder and antiseptic detergents.

As part of the intervention, the ICAG Secretariat contributed a 17kg Samsung washing machine and a 60-litre vaccine/breast milk fridge, aimed at supporting hygiene, safe storage, and the day-to-day care of newborns at the unit.

The gesture to the Newborn Unit and Kids Ward forms part of its annual social responsibility geared towards extending a hand of help to the less privileged.

The donation, which brought together members of the Kascity District Society and officials of the ICAG Secretariat in a joint effort to support vulnerable newborns and children at the facility, was on the theme, “Serving humanity with professional excellence: a lifeline for tiny lives”.

The donation comes after the group of accountants living at Kasoa and its environs had engaged the hospital’s management earlier in the year to understand the pressing needs of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Kids Ward.

The visit took a personal turn when a former Chairman of the Kascity District Society, Mr Joshua Lomotey, donated GH¢10,000 towards the oxygen therapy of a premature baby whose parents were struggling to sustain the treatment. Another society member, Madam Efe Duncan, also made a financial contribution towards the child’s care after the team witnessed the baby’s condition firsthand during a tour of the Newborn Unit.

The Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital, which began operations in 2020, serves Kasoa and surrounding communities as a referral facility.

Established in 2023, its Newborn Unit has a 13-bed capacity, while the Kids’ Ward has 14 beds.

Hope

The Chairperson of the Kascity District Society, Sylvia Ammoro, commended KASCITY members for their generous voluntary contributions.

She singled out the ICAG Secretariat for special mention, thanking the institute’s leadership for the washing machine and fridge, and stressing that the gesture meant “much more than the monetary value of the items presented.

She explained that the initiative was meant to give hope to the most vulnerable members of society a better chance at life.

She further stated that the society was working to elevate care standards for the children while embracing the hospital and its patients as part of the wider community.

“Any contribution that helped save a newborn’s life was, in effect, an investment in the country’s future,” she added.

Commitment

Speaking on behalf of ICAG President Augustine Addo, Council Member Thomas Esso reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to giving back to society and commended the Kascity

District Society for focusing this year’s project on neonatal and child healthcare.

For his part, General Secretary Abdul Fatawu Zakaria called on other accounting professionals to emulate the gesture of giving back to society.

Receiving the items on behalf of the hospital, the Deputy Chief Nursing Officer and Nursing Manager for the Newborn Unit and Kids Ward, Akua Asantewaa Agyei, expressed gratitude to the team for the support.
