Police vow to enforce court order against galamsey protest

The Accra Regional Police Command has announced it will strictly enforce a High Court order prohibiting the “Stop Galamsey” demonstration scheduled for Friday, February 27, 2026.

The court granted the order for prohibition on February 24, citing concerns over public order and safety.

Authorities noted that the planned protest coincides with the State of the Nation Address, creating potential security conflicts.

The police addressed circulating social media reports from the conveners claiming they had not been formally served with any court processes.

A February 26 statement released by the Greater Accra Regional Police Command said the order of prohibition was duly served on the organisers and urged them to obey it.

“The Accra Regional Police Command wishes to inform the general public that a High Court in Accra, on 24th February 2026, granted an order for prohibition restraining the conveners of the “Stop Galamsey” demonstration from holding the planned protest on Friday, 27th February 2026.

“The Order, which was duly served on the conveners, prohibits the demonstration on the said date in the interest of public order and safety, particularly as it coincides with the State of the Nation Address.”

While the immediate demonstration is barred, the police command indicated that the door remains open for the protest to happen at a later time.

In line with the High Court’s directives and the Public Order Act, the police said they are seeking to engage the organisers to find a mutually convenient date for the event.

“However, in line with the Court’s directive, the police remain open to engaging the conveners to agree on a mutually convenient date for the demonstration, in accordance with the Public Order Act.

“The Accra Regional Police Command urges the general public to comply with the court order and avoid any actions that may lead to breaches of the peace.”
