President John Dramani Mahama has defended his government’s economic management, noting that targeted policy measures have stabilised the cedi and strengthened overall economic performance.

Speaking in Parliament during the 2026 State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Friday, February 27, 2026, he announced that Ghana’s economy has surpassed the $100 billion mark for the first time, positioning the country among Africa’s largest economies.

“Most importantly, Ghana’s economy has surpassed the 100 billion mark, we made currency stability a priority, and we have delivered. We did not arrest the dollar; we strengthened the cedi to put up a good fight against other currencies,” he remarked.

President Mahama further disclosed that the cedi has recorded significant gains against major international currencies, appreciating by 40.7% against the US dollar, 30.9% against the British pound, and 24% against the euro.

He described this progress as part of a wider economic recovery program that has positively impacted multiple sectors within the first year of his administration.

The State of the Nation Address is in accordance with Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution.
