Fishermen who were attacked at sea off the coast of Awutu Senya have been rescued, with one of the victims alleging that the armed men who ambushed them were Nigerians wielding AK-47 rifles.

The victims, who had set out on a routine fishing expedition near Senya Bereku in the Central Region, were returning to shore when they were confronted by heavily armed assailants.

According to one of the rescued fishermen, the attackers approached in a black boat and immediately took control of the situation.

The victim claimed the armed men pointed AK-47 rifles directly at them and issued chilling threats.

“They pointed AK-47 rifles at us and told us they would kill us if we didn’t cooperate,” he alleged in an interview on JoyNews on Wednesday, February 26, 2026.

The fisherman further alleged that the attackers spoke in a manner that suggested they were Nigerians.

However, security agencies have not officially confirmed the identity or nationality of the suspects, as investigations remain ongoing.

Ghana Navy launch search and rescue operation after attack on fishermen

The attack reportedly left the fishermen stranded at sea after the robbers seized outboard motors and other essential equipment. The loss of the motors made it impossible for the victims to return to shore on their own, forcing them to rely on assistance from other fishermen and security patrol teams.

Residents in the fishing community have expressed fear and frustration, describing the incident as traumatic and economically devastating.

For many of the victims, the stolen equipment represent their primary source of income and sustenance for their families.

Security agencies, including marine and naval personnel, have since intensified patrols along the coastline to track down the perpetrators and prevent further attacks.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing and have assured the public that efforts are being made to bring those responsible to justice, while enhancing security in the area.
