The Ghana Armed Forces has successfully rescued dozens of stranded Ghanaian fishermen who were attacked by suspected sea robbers off the coast of the Central Region.
In a press release dated February 26, 2026, the military said it had “concluded its search and rescue operations, which started at dawn today to locate distressed Ghanaian fishermen at sea, approximately 35 nautical miles off the coast of Gomoa Nyanyano/Senya Bereku in the Central Region.”
According to the statement, the fishermen were left stranded after being robbed of their outboard motors and personal belongings.
“The fishermen got stranded after they were attacked by robbers who took the entire fishermen’s outboard motors and personal belongings,” the release stated.
The affected boats included Argentina 2, Argentina 3, Sea Lion, and Berema Nsukwa, among others.
The Ghana Navy led the operation, supported by the Ghana Air Force and local fishermen from Senya Bereku and Nyanyano.
The Navy’s Special Boat Squadron, using fast interceptor boats and backed by naval ships from the Eastern and Western Naval Commands, evacuated 24 victims to Tema and 47 others to Senya Bereku.
Encouragingly, interviews conducted with those rescued showed that “no Ghanaian fisherman has been kidnapped.”
Meanwhile, the Navy has intensified patrols within Ghana’s Exclusive Economic Zone, including the affected area.
The Armed Forces urged fishermen and maritime users to “exercise extreme caution and report any suspicious activity as the situation is being assessed.”
The military also acknowledged the support of the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui, as well as local fisherfolk and residents who assisted in the rescue.
Reaffirming its commitment, the statement stressed that the Ghana Navy “remains fully committed to protecting Ghanaian fishermen, combating piracy and armed robbery at sea, and ensuring the safety of vessels within Ghana’s Exclusive Economic Zone.”
