Thirty-eight fishermen who were stranded at sea following an armed attack have been rescued after a robbery off Senya Bereku in the Central Region.

The victims, who were travelling in two locally manufactured canoes, were safely brought ashore by a joint rescue team made up of the Ghana Police Service Marine Police Unit and the National Disaster Management Organisation.

Ghana Navy launch search and rescue operation after attack on fishermen

The rescue operation was launched after reports indicated that several fishermen had been left stranded at sea following the attack.

According to preliminary information, the fishermen had embarked on a routine fishing expedition in the early hours of Thursday, February 26, 2026, but were allegedly ambushed by armed assailants in a black boat while returning to shore.

The attackers, according to citinewsroom, reportedly fired warning shots and seized outboard motors and generator sets, leaving the fishermen stranded in the water.

The incident has heightened concerns among coastal fishing communities, where fears are growing over the rising threat of attacks at sea.

Additional canoes linked to the incident have since been located, while the Ghana Armed Forces earlier launched a search operation at dawn, about 35 nautical miles off the coast, to rescue any remaining victims.
