An award-winning Hospital Management System (HMS) developed by students from the Department of Information Technology Studies at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) is currently undergoing structured refinement under the guidance of the UPSA Developers Hub.
The HMS project emerged as the Best Programming Team project at the end of the 2025/2026 first-semester Level 300 Programming course (IT4 & IT5) on 27 November 2025. The project distinguished itself through clear design, comprehensive system documentation, and the team’s exceptional ability to defend their technical decisions.
Leadership and Recognition
Jerry Myron, the leader of the award-winning project team, spearheaded the development of the HMS system and now leads the dedicated student team focused on refining and advancing the project.
“It’s not enough to code; we must also understand the systems we design and how they’ll impact real-world use,” – Jerry Myron, HMS Team Lead.
Jerry Myron, leader of the award-winning Hospital Management System project, proudly holds his certificate for Best Programming Team, recognizing his outstanding leadership and technical contributions.
From Academic Project to Structured Prototype Development
Developed as part of an innovative pedagogical approach, the HMS project encouraged the team to move beyond coding syntax. They were required to think critically about system design, justify technical decisions, and document their work in line with real-world applications.
The project was initially assessed on its functionality, design logic, and documentation clarity. Following its recognition, it has now transitioned into a structured refinement phase within the UPSA Developers Hub, where it will undergo iterative improvements with the goal of aligning more closely with real operational needs.
Domain Advisory Support
To further strengthen the HMS prototype, domain experts from healthcare institutions, who facilitated prior observational engagements, have consented to provide advisory guidance during the refinement phase. This expert input ensures that the system remains grounded in practical, operational realities.
The UPSA Developers Hub’s Role in Continuous Learning
The UPSA Developers Hub plays a critical role in preparing students for professional challenges. The HMS project’s transition into a structured refinement phase exemplifies the Hub’s commitment to sustained learning and continuous professional development.
Through this initiative, the students involved are not only equipped with technical skills but also exposed to the demands of real-world systems development. They will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge in real institutional contexts, improving the functionality and usability of the HMS system.
Towards a Broader Vision
The work done on the HMS system is part of a broader vision to prepare students to address complex institutional problems using technology. Through structured prototype development and domain expertise, the Hub is contributing to building a pipeline of software engineers who are capable of designing and developing systems that respond meaningfully to real-world challenges.
