Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has expressed strong confidence in his First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor, stating that the country and Parliament would greatly benefit if he succeeds him in office.

Bagbin made the remarks while addressing the media at the launch of Parliament’s Corporate Strategic Plan (2026–2030) on Thursday, February 12, 2026.

He commended Ahiafor’s leadership qualities, dedication to parliamentary duties, and vast experience in legislative processes.

“If we are lucky that my First Deputy Speaker takes over from me, the better for everybody,” Bagbin stated, in what political observers describe as a strong endorsement of Ahiafor’s leadership credentials.

The Speaker emphasised the importance of continuity, institutional memory, and competent leadership in strengthening parliamentary governance.

He noted that the effectiveness of Parliament largely depends on capable deputies who can sustain and advance the vision and operational efficiency of the House.

Bernard Ahiafor, who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Akatsi South, has played a key role in supporting the Speaker in the conduct of parliamentary business. His tenure as First Deputy Speaker has seen him preside over sittings and contribute significantly to maintaining order and adherence to parliamentary procedures.

Meanwhile, Bagbin also called on the government to release land for the construction of a dedicated Parliamentary complex to enhance the operational independence of the legislature.

According to him, Parliament’s continued operation within the State House presents structural and logistical challenges that limit its efficiency and institutional growth.

“At least we should be liberated from being tenants of the State House to having our own premises as an arm of government. There are a lot of limitations – infrastructural limitations,” he stated.

The Corporate Strategic Plan (2026–2030) is expected to serve as a comprehensive roadmap to guide Parliament’s operations, strengthen institutional capacity, and enhance legislative performance over the next five years.

The plan focuses on improving transparency, accountability, and effective representation in Ghana’s democratic governance.

Political analysts believe Bagbin’s remarks highlight growing recognition of Ahiafor’s contribution to parliamentary leadership while also drawing attention to critical infrastructure challenges facing the legislature.

Although Bagbin did not suggest any immediate plans to step down, his comments have sparked discussions within political circles about leadership continuity and the future direction of Parliament.

Parliament is expected to rely on the newly launched strategic plan to enhance its legislative, oversight, and representative functions as it works towards deepening Ghana’s democratic development.
