President John Dramani Mahama and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres have held discussions on African security and democracy on the sidelines of the 39th African Union (AU) Assembly of Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The meeting focused on key security challenges confronting the continent, particularly the deteriorating situation in the Sahel region, as well as measures to strengthen democratic governance across Africa.

Mr Guterres commended President Mahama’s leadership and took note of his upcoming assumption of the AU Chairmanship in 2027, highlighting Ghana’s continued role in promoting stability within the West African subregion.

Regional peace featured prominently in the discussions, with special attention given to the volatile situation in member states of the Alliance of Sahelian States (AES).

President Mahama briefed the UN Chief on his ongoing diplomatic engagements aimed at restoring peace in the troubled region.

Mr Guterres assured the UN’s full support to President Mahama as he prepares for his future leadership of the continental body, recognising the crucial role Ghana is expected to play in addressing Africa’s pressing challenges.

At the end of the meeting, the Secretary-General presented President Mahama with a special gift—a copy of the UN Charter in all six official UN languages.
