The Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare-Addo, has disclosed that a recent survey conducted by his Ministry has revealed worrying levels of exposure to drug use among students across the country.
According to the findings, 41% of tertiary students and 37% of senior high school students have been exposed to drug use. Colleges of education recorded even higher awareness levels, with 54% of students reporting exposure.
Mr. Opare-Addo described the figures as alarming and cautioned that they pose a serious threat to the education sector and the overall well-being of young people.
He disclosed while speaking at the “Show Your Love” Campaign organised by the Mental Health Authority under the Ministry of Health.
“After the survey at the Ministry for Youth Development late last year, our findings scared all of us. 41% of our tertiary students and 37% of our Senior High School students report exposure to drug use,” he said
The Minister also announced that his Ministry will collaborate with the Mental Health Authority and other key stakeholders to strengthen mental health support systems for young people.
He explained that the partnership will focus on integrating mental health literacy into youth employment and entrepreneurship programmes, as well as strengthening referral pathways within youth centres and service placement structures.
“Going forward, the ministry seeks to collaborate with key stakeholders, including the Mental Health Authority, to integrate mental health literacy into youth employment and entrepreneurship programmes and strengthen referral pathways within youth centres and service placement,” he stated.
