NACOC Destroys Illicit Drugs Worth Over GH¢2.4m

Some of the illicit drugs being destroyed

The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), has taken a significant step against drug trafficking by destroying a large cache of illicit drugs valued over GH¢2.4 million in Tamale, in the Northern Region.

The disposal, conducted at Gbalahi Field in Tamale, was part of NACOC’s ongoing efforts to curb the distribution and use of illegal substances.

The destroyed illicit drugs including tramadol and cannabis were seized during a series of intelligence-led operations with support from other security agencies, and the destruction followed a court order issued after the successful prosecution and conviction of those involved.

The Northern Regional Commander of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), Bakari Issahaque, told journalists that tramadol and related products of 50mg to 100mg are permitted into the country, but anything above 100mg is not.

He said NACOC combines enforcement with public education.

“NACOC is not only into enforcement, we also go to schools, mosques, churches and communities to sensitise the public on the dangers of illicit drugs,” he said.

Mr. Issahaque noted that the commission provides free rehabilitation services for voluntary drug users

“We have a unit called Counselling, Reintegration and Rehabilitation where drug users can volunteer and receive assistance free of charge. If you wait until you are arrested, these services will not be available and you will be prosecuted,” he warned.

He advised young people in the region to avoid illicit drugs.

“My advice to the youth is that they should stay away from illicit drugs, don’t wait until you are arrested,” he stated.
