The woman says she is a relative of the deceased student Nana Agyei Ahyia who died in Latvia
A woman claiming to be a close relative of Nana Yaw Agyei Ahyia, the Ghanaian student who died in Latvia, has accused the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of charging the bereaved family money and issuing a fake airline ticket to the deceased’s mother, preventing her from travelling to Latvia as part of a government delegation.
Speaking publicly in a TikTok video sighted by GhanaWeb on February 2, 2026, the woman, who identified herself as a sister of the deceased, said Nana Agyei’s mother was invited to join the delegation but was turned away at Kotoka International Airport after officials allegedly informed her that her ticket was not valid.

“I am speaking as a sister to the deceased. I’m talking about Nana Yaw Agyei… Nana Agyei’s mother was called yesterday to come to Kotoka International Airport with the delegates so they could travel to Latvia.
“On arrival, the officers told Nana Agyei’s mother that the plane ticket was fake. She was not able to go to Latvia,” she alleged.
She further claimed that while the grieving mother was stranded at the airport, government appointees who were not related to the deceased were allowed to travel.
“In our presence, we saw nearly 18 delegates, government appointees who are not even Nana Agyei’s family members, traveling to Latvia. But how can justice be served if the family of the boy is not present? Authorities of Latvia, please note, Nana Agyei’s family is not part of the delegation,” she said.
The woman also accused officials of charging the deceased’s mother money during the visa application process.
“They gave the mother a fake ticket. Even during the visa process, they asked Nana Agyei’s mother to pay more than GH¢2,000. If they claim to be delivering justice for someone, why is the family asked to pay for it?” she queried.
She continued, “Because of the money they took from Nana Agyei’s mother, they ended up giving her a fake ticket. A woman who has lost her first child had to stand at Kotoka International Airport in pain again.”
She also questioned why the mother’s passport was allegedly being withheld while government officials had already travelled.
“They are keeping Nana Agyei’s mother’s passport when their appointees are already in Latvia. I don’t understand. If they claim to be seeking justice for Nana Agyei, his family must be present to explain what happened and ensure the process is transparent,” she said, visibly aggrieved.
According to her, family members who were initially included in the delegation list by the Minister of Foreign Affairs were later removed.
“We, the family members who were brought to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, had our names cancelled. They replaced us with government appointees who are total strangers,” she said.
Nana Agyei Ahyia, an 18-year-old Ghanaian student studying in Latvia, died under what the family believes were mysterious circumstances.
He was a first-year Electrical Engineering (Adaptronic) student at Riga Technical University and passed away on June 4, 2025.
According to the family, he had been living in an apartment on Baznicas Street in Riga.

On June 4, 2025, his relatives were informed that he had allegedly fallen from the sixth floor of his apartment and died.
