Justice Mabel Maame Agyemang is the current Chief Justice of the Turks and Caicos Islands
Justice Mabel Maame Agyemang, a Ghana-trained lawyer born and bred in Kumasi, has carved an extraordinary judicial career that has seen her rise to the highest judicial office in two different countries.
Justice Agyemang made history as the first female Chief Justice of The Gambia and currently serves as the Chief Justice of the Turks and Caicos Islands, a position she has held since 2020.
She was Ghana’s 1st woman lawyer, and 1st woman High Court judge in the Commonwealth
Called to the Ghanaian Bar in 1987, Justice Agyemang began her judicial journey shortly after, progressing steadily through the ranks with what observers describe as quiet precision.
Her early years on the Bench saw her serve in several jurisdictions across Ghana, including Accra, Cape Coast, Koforidua, Kumasi and Tema.
Her legal education began at Wesley Girls Senior High School in Cape Coast, after which she attended the University of Ghana and later the Ghana School of Law. Following her call to the Bar, she distinguished herself within Ghana’s judiciary, serving in various capacities and earning the respect of both colleagues and litigants.
Between 1996 and 2000, Justice Agyemang served as Vice-President of the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana, and in 2002, she was elevated to the High Court, marking a significant milestone in her domestic judicial career.
Her expertise later took her beyond Ghana’s borders. She has also worked as a Superior Court Judge in three Commonwealth Jurisdictions.
Justice Agyemang served in the judiciaries of Ghana, The Gambia and Eswatini, building a reputation as a superior court judge with decades of experience.
In August 2013, she was appointed Chief Justice of The Gambia, becoming the first woman to occupy that office. She served until her abrupt removal in February 2014.

Her international judicial journey continued in February 2020 when Nigel Dakin, Governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands, announced her appointment as Chief Justice of the Turks and Caicos Islands.
She was sworn into office on March 30, 2020, and officially assumed duty on April 1, 2020.
