A member of the communication team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hamza Suhuyini, has expressed deep concern over recent public comments made by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey.
He warned that some of the utterances from Kwetey could undermine internal unity and negatively affect the party’s future electoral fortunes.
NDC bars all government appointees from contesting for party positions
Speaking on Channel One TV on January 31, 2026, Suhuyini, who supported the general secretary’s candidature, also stated that the latter’s remarks were driven by principle and loyalty to the party, rather than opposition.
“I’m worried, and since our general secretary has always been forceful in upholding to the principles of the National Democratic Congress, I think that those of us who are also known to have publicly campaigned for him, in conformity with that democratic principles, I think that I’m also free to speak my mind on this matter. And one of the principles I have as a member of this party is never to be called into submission when it comes to beliefs that I hold dear,” he said.
Suhuyini stressed that while he respects the general secretary’s desire to build a disciplined and functional party, public statements must be carefully weighed, particularly now that the party is in government.
“I am extremely worried that, inasmuch as I respect his desire to have a working party, his utterances too need to be measured in a way that in the future it does not hurt the fortunes of the party,” he stressed.
He cited specific instances, beginning with remarks made in Kumasi, where the general secretary allegedly suggested that some party members were lobbying to protect members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“… the first utterance I found a bit problematic was the declaration in Kumasi that as a party, he has picked intel that some of our people were engaging, lobbying to get NPP people out of the hook. Whether it is true or not, if it is said publicly, what you have succeeded in doing is to throw in doubt and suspicion amongst the rank and file of the party and government, and that mistrust starts from that place, and it becomes difficult for us to control,” he indicated.
Suhuyini further raised concerns about comments made during activities in the Volta Region to mark the June 4th Revolution, where Fifi Kwetey reportedly addressed party members, calling for President John Dramani Mahama to seek a third term.
“As if that was not enough, our general secretary again, somewhere in the Volta Region, for the June 4th Revolution, openly referred to those who are calling for Mahama to go for a third term (sic). It is within everybody’s democratic right. Many of us may have disagreed with those calls, but these are party people,” he said.
According to Suhuyini, labeling such individuals as sycophants risks deepening internal divisions.
“When we are in government, our utterances are important. So, if you make statements to the point that they are sycophants, it throws in another element of conflict, and these things could spell doom for the party,” he emphasised.
He also referenced the introduction of the word “greed” into recent political discourse, cautioning against rhetoric that could alienate government appointees and party executives.
“The day before yesterday, another word was introduced to the dynamics: greed. I respect people who are no-nonsense. This party cannot win power in 2028 without these government appointees, whether they are part of the National Executive or not,” he expressed concern.
Suhuyini concluded by reaffirming his confidence in the NDC General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, and explained that his criticism comes from a place of trust and long-standing support.

“… When he was campaigning to be general secretary, I had to abandon someone who had even supported me financially in the past, in my own political dreams, to support his candidature, because I believe in him.
“And that is why when I feel that maybe certain utterances, which he may not really appreciate the future implications, it is my responsibility to prompt him on it, and that is the beauty of the National Democratic Congress,” he concluded.
