Voting has officially commenced across the country as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) elects its flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections.

More than 211,000 delegates are expected to cast their ballots at over 300 polling centres nationwide.

From Prof Adu Boahen to Akufo-Addo: A history of NPP presidential primaries

Five candidates contesting the race are former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia; former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong; former Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum; former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong; and former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong.

The election is seen as crucial in shaping the future direction of the NPP after the defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Delegates voting today, January 31, 2026, include members of national, regional and constituency party structures, party elders, and recognised external branches.

The final delegate figure reflects adjustments made to the register to account for deceased members and forfeitures.

The Ashanti and Greater Accra regions constitute the largest voting blocs, followed by the Eastern, Central and Western regions.

Political observers note that voting patterns in these key regions could prove decisive in determining the outcome.

Security has been tightened nationwide, with police officers deployed to ensure a peaceful, orderly and credible voting process.

The NPP leadership has urged delegates to vote responsibly and to uphold party unity once the results are declared.

Voting is expected to close later in the day, after which counting will take place at the various polling centres before results are transmitted to the party’s national collation centre in Accra.

The candidate who emerges victorious will face the immediate task of uniting the party, healing internal divisions, and crafting a compelling national message as the NPP begins preparations for the 2028 general elections.
